WHAT WE DO
The Georgetown University Lecture Fund is a non-partisan student-run organization that exists to enrich the academic experience of the Georgetown community. The Lecture Fund strives to bring speakers to Georgetown's main campus to enlighten, to educate and, occasionally, to entertain.
In the past, the Lecture Fund has arranged forums on such topics as the Electoral College, Global Warming and Nuclear Energy Alternatives, and Urban Economics. Along with these panel discussions, the Lecture Fund hosts an active calendar of individual speakers addressing a wide variety of subjects and disciplines. Some of the speakers we have hosted during the 2007-2008 school year included Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ben&Jerry's Ice Cream Magnate Jerry Greenfield, Genetics Pioneer Craig Venter, Political Commentator George Stephanopoulos, TV Actress Hayden Panettiere, and Presidential Candidates Ron Paul and Bill Richardson.
HOW WE WORK
At the beginning of each academic year, the Student Activities Commission (SAC) allocates money to the Lecture Fund. Once a week throughout the year, Associate Members meet with the Chair, the Vice-Chair for Internal Affairs, and the Vice-Chair for External Affairs, discussing and deliberating about different potential speakers coming to campus and about how to allocate these funds. At these meetings, representatives from other student groups also present co-sponsorship proposals, usually in the form of funding or publicity assistance requests.
WHO WE ARE
The Lecture Fund is composed of Members, Associate Members, and Elected Members. Membership is available to any Georgetown student at any time, and members are placed on the LF's mailing list and also assist with ushering at LF events. Associate Member applications are reviewed by current LF Associate Members at the beginning of the Fall and Spring terms, and these students attend the weekly meetings and are encouraged to work on bringing speakers from around the world to the Hilltop. Finally, once a year the Associate Members vote on our Chair, Vice Chair for Internal Affairs, Vice Chair for External Affairs, Chief of Staff, Secretary, Treasurer, and General Membership Coordinator positions.
